Surprisingly rather shockingly, I was awake since 4.30 am and did not know what to do this morning.
"Today is probably the first day of margazhi (dhanur)!!!"- that's how I got up from bed unusually (unlike switching the alarm snooze atleast 3-4 times and sleeping).
Yeh, it's dhanur maadha pirappu!! Probably, it's HIS wish and arul to do that.
Have you heard of the phrase " avan arulaal avan thaal vanangi (அவன் அருளால் அவன் தாள் வணங்கி". (I have forgotten who said this). This means you need his blessing to even pray him- Adhu dhaan pola irukku!!
Lord Krishna has said in Bhagavat geetha that " In the 12 months, I am Margazhi". What else to describe after that!!!
Listen to thiruppavai by sudha ragunathan here:
To know more about margazhi, read this message Courtesy:http://groups.google.com/group/tamilcommunity/browse_thread/thread/b7f0e845075e09f7
The greatness of Margazhi month
The Yugam, in which presently we are living, is called as "Kali Yugam". Other than this Kali Yugam, there are 3 Yugams that we have crossed and they are Kretha, Thretha and Dwapara Yugam. In all these 3 yugams, Sriman Narayanan has taken lots of Avatharams (incarnations) to protect the Dharmam against Adharmam (evil) and protect the life of his bhaktas. Margazhi (from mid decembre to mid january ) brings the spring season.
The month of Margazhi which is supposed to be sacred from all aspects. Thus it's rendered to the god himself in aim of attaining prosperity and blessings, hoping god showers with all good luck. The very objective this month is to get together and offer the prayers, he will surely listens to it. How to go about it? Generally Brahma Muhurtham is considered to be good time perform pooja. Early morning on all 30 days Margazhi between 4.00 am to 6.00 am is beneficial for human being while the whole Margazhi the Brahma Muhurtham for DEVAS. The Tamil month of Margazhi is of great importance because Lord Krishna says in the Bhagavad Gita that he is Margazhi among the twelve months.
In this month, there are many programmes for SriVaishnavas in particular.
On all the thirty days of this month, Tirupavai Pasurams will be rendered in the early morning in all temples and houses. Adhyayana Utsavam for 21 days (10+10+1) will also be held during this month by rendering holy scriptures (Four thousand Divya Prabhandam Pasurams) at 108 Divya Desam including Sri Rangam and many other Vaishnava Sthalams.
The famous Vaikunda Ekadasi also will be celebrated in the early hours of the Tenth day of Adhyayana Utsavam the people will join with Lord in proceeding Symbolically to Swargham and on this Swargavasal will be opened in all temples. Lakhs of people gather on 3rd January 2004, the Vaikunta Ekadesi day in Sri Rangam, Tirupathi, Thiruvallikeni. Kanchi, Srivilliputhur, Brindavan and in many other temples. Saivites will celebrate Arudhara Dharshan. In Srivilliputhur, there will be "Piriya Vidai and Sri Andal Neerattu Utsavam" and followed by Sri Andal Thirukkalyanam on Bhogi Day". The Proverb in Tamil says that "Thai Piranthal Vazhi Pirakkum".
On completion of Margazhi and commencement of Thai, there would be better future and there is a way for happiness and good omens. On Bhogi day, people not only cleans the houses, burn the old things and but also purifies from bad things & thoughts or situation by rendering prayers. Elders and music lovers also visit to the Sabhas in the evening to listen music, attend dance programmes and other cultural activities throughout Margazhi. This month is familiarly known as Margazhi Maha Festival. All musicians, Vocalists and dozens of singers will gather together at Thiruvayaru and render Keerthanas of SriThiyagarajar.

After a long time, I cooked a grand dinner for 4 people(Including me) here. Meeting 3 friends at a time in El Paso is a big thing for me. Unlike in lex, I play myself silently and not participate in any cooking activity..
A hunger to cook many no of dishes was pushing to find a day and do it. Murugan Thirukalyanam - the day after Kandhar Shasti was the day I picked. Theme- Swami Kalyana saapadu!!
Menu: Palani Panchamritam, Mor Kuzhambu, Sadham, Lemon rasam, Potato curry, Appalam, Vadai, Payasam, home made Lemon-Pickle, Beans Kootu, cucumber pacchadi and Bahala bath.
Wanted to upload this even before 2 weeks.. But edho velai..My photos may not appeal so much. My roommie made a collage with whatever snaps we had. We forgot to take pics of some other dishes..

Yaaahooo... Finally, I made it. In the list of things that I am trying to improvise the taste, look and smell, the cocoa chocolate is out. I am so glad..yaaahooooo...
Okay, let me tell you the reason behind my excitement. There are some dishes in my list whose cooking conditions have to be optimized to get the exact taste of mom's or the best preparation. Some are not bad but that exact taste is missing. Some dishes come into and go out of the list very soon. Some stay forever in the list showing my inability, lazyness or its own complexity.
Recently, the list contains(/ed) mom's cocoa chocolate, sujan's bisebela bhath, prabu's sambhar vadai, mom's mor kozhambu, my periama's thakkali thokku . Recently, mor kuzhambu and bise belabhath are almost out of the list. But, finally, yesterday, the chocolate came out of that list..
I finally optimized it w.r.t. the u.s butter sugar and milk powder. This is a dish wherein I did all the mistakes and learned the right procedure by my meticulous efforts. Well, you will never know where you will be dumb!! I have succeded like Mohammed of Ghazni or ashoka after several trials.
Here is the recipe to make cocoa chocolate (not a pastry) in just 15 minutes.
1. Cocoa (Hersheys cocoa powder)- 1 cup
2. Milk powder (Dry milk) - 2 cups
3. Sugar - 3 cups
4. Butter stick (land of lakes brand-unsalted- 1lb)- 3/4 of one stick
Easy.. the amounts are just one, two, three. Remember sugar is the max.
Before you start,
1. Mix the milk powder and cocoa evenly. Break the small milk powder granules by crushing between fingers for atleast 5 minutes. This is very important as the milk powder is not very nice (granulated) here in U.S
2. Just melt the butter. Remember, the butter should not boil. Just melt and have 3/4 cup of that. If you dont melt and add it as butter in the recipe, it does not set.
3. Take square shape plate or box and grease the bottom (full) and the wall (about 2 inches) with butter. Why not a round plate?? It's because you will get a lot of bits and small, uneven pieces when its a round plate.
1. Add water to the sugar just enough to cover in a thick bottomed pan and place it on the stove. Set the stove in 4 or 5
2. The sugar dissolves and it goes to a thicker state in 5-7 minutes. Dip a laddle and take a small amount between two fingers (index and thumb) to see if it forms a string. Please be patient. Let it form a proper string. I tend to hurry here. Don't do that
3. Now add 1/2 cup or a little more of melted butter. You will see white bubbles. Stir the pan. Remember, the more you add, the longer it takes to set
4. Add the cocoa and milk powder mix to the pan. Stir in a circular way around the periphery till you see all the mix is dissolved with the liquid
5. Stir, lift the laddle and drop into the pan to see if the mixture falls like a typical flow in chocolate ads. (Nalla madipu madipaa vizhanum). You can see slight thickening/shrinkage of chocolate at the perphery of the pan
6. Pour the chocolate into the tray
7. When it is warm and molten, cut into pieces. It may not look like pieces. Eventually it will.
I am an expert in this section.
1. If it solidified before pouring, it means it was too long on stove. You can avoid this by looking for solid chips at the edges of pan. You can slightly make-up by addiing a small amount of boiling water, put it back in the pan on stove and then pour back. Do not leave on heat for long. It may or may not work depending on how much you spoiled.
2. If it did not set, leave it in freezer for a while and then put it out. It will solidify before next morning. But, dont forget to make cuts horizontally and vertically when it is molten.
3. If it did not set at all,
1. Probably, you did not let the sugar form a string (Paagu varla). Keep it on stove for longer and then pour again
2. It may also mean it has less sugar. Take some sugar in a water, boil and add to this chocolate in a pan, heat and then pour
3. If its chewy like "kamarkat", a) leave it overnight. It will get fine many a times.b) it has too much sugar or butter that is not letting it set. Put it in a freezer and if it still did not get better, give it to children wrapped with a paper. They will love it.
Okay.. But remember, if you eat in plenty, "one thing is not out". I mean it causes constipation :)-

Now, I see that this fluid tank can run low and run out sooner. Looks like "it may break my backbone". Probably a dangerous observation or speculation !! Can consider it as warning, if there is some expectation out from me!!
Who knows if it can bring out a "new nature"- some sort of adaptation to survive the damage !!
Nothing novel to convey to the surrounding !! Just the third law !! Give the fluid back to ME if you need some enthusiam to infect you with !!

Most of us know that snake and ladder is our "Paramapadham". But did you know that each ladder and each snake (at a specific position/kattam) are unique and denote a Virtue or Vice respectively?
Read the cut-pasted post below. May be we should memorize and teach the virtues and vices to the next generation
" The game had its origin in India and was called Moksha Patam or Parama Padam or Mokshapat. It was used to teach Hinduism and Hindu values to children. The British renamed it as Snake and Ladders.
Now, when and who created this game? Most people believe it was created by the 13th century poet saint Gyandev. There are certain references which take the game back to 2nd century BC.
The ladders represented virtues and snakes vices. In the original game square 12 was faith, 51 was Reliability, 57 was Generosity, 76 was Knowledge, and 78 was Asceticism. These were the squares were the ladder was found.
Square 41 was for Disobedience, 44 for Arrogance, 49 for Vulgarity, 52 for Theft, 58 for Lying, 62 for Drunkenness, 69 for Debt, 84 for Anger, 92 for Greed, 95 for Pride, 73 for Murder and 99 for Lust. These were the squares were the snake was found.
The Square 100 represented Nirvana or Moksha.
The British took the game to England in 1892 and named it Snake and Ladders and changed it according to Victorian values"
When you observe the virtues, with increase in the position number, better virtues are aligned and the highest being the best. In the same way, the worser vices are aligned.
From this list, it seems lust is the worst thingaame!!! Makkale pathu nadanthukonga:)-
On a serious note, arranging them in the increasing order
All I can deduce is this
84, 92, 99 are kaamam, krodham and lobham - the 3 worst things and are the major hinderances to attain moksha even if you are ascetic or knowledgeable !
Can you decipher anything out reg. the significance of the number or the order... input please??

My dear Makkaaaaa!!
Kutti priya was vettipriya till 2007. But, unbelievably busy now a days..Ellam Ph. D. dhaan.. Vera enna iruka mudiyum.. As my friend says " 'Ural'ukkulla vizhundaachu..Idi pattu dhaane aaganum"... Missing those days when I used to sit reading blogs sipping coffee every now and then..
Well, ennatha solla..Makkale..matter onnum illa..pulambals of life dhaan everyday.. Timae illa..
Well, 2 weeks ago, I drove up to Texas A &M University from El Paso via Austin to give a presentation. I started early morning from austin on a friday. The two hour drive to A&M is simply suberb and memorable. I always had a weird interest to go around pastoral place on a working day. I mean that I should not go in a gang to see such a scenic place but should go myself when my friends and faculty are working in their offices. In brief, naan vettiya sutharche adhu working daya irukanum..May be, that wish of mine being fullfilled during that visit made me happy from within. May be enna May be - adhaan!!
Hyundai Sonata - Pastoral scenary with Cows and goats in farm land (I love cows and horses) - Ilayaraja's 'Elangaathu Vessudhe' Song played - - Tears came out from my eyes- Enjoyed like anything. All of a sudden, you see a sign board saying College station (the location where A&M univ is ). I was like.. Oh my God!!
Nobody can imagine that a university can be in that area. Yeh, the univ is in between a big farming area. The town " college station " has nothing other than the university and Texas A&M is so huge.. Never have I seen such a big university - probably the second biggest univ in U.S.A i guess. It had resemblence of BITS, Pilani... I started living in the past for a while..
As usual, I got lost inside this big campus. So, I got a chance to go around the whole campus.
Man... I enjoyed the feel ..everybody working around me. I am roaming around campus..After a while, finally... I felt responsible that I need to be at the meeting, came out of the dream world and identified the alumni center and reached - Ofcourse late.. but much earlier to my talk time.
It was a presentation contest.. Ammaavukku bayamee illa..because my thoughts were full of happiness and admiration for the drive and location. Never I got so much out of my own control..loosened feel..irresponsible.. Thanni adichaa ipdi dhaan irukum pola irukku- inam puriyaadha sandhosham!! Well, my talk went okay. I made a lot of friends within hours from different univs in texas who were at the meeting. I asked some of the Aggies (Texas A & M ites) to show me around and they did. Ammavukku consolation prize kedachudhu. But somehow, I was not having any emotion towards it..Mannn..
Vaazhkaiyla manasukulla aasai pattadhu (evlo sillya irundhaalum) namma edhir paakadha timela nirai verumbodhu kedaikra sandhosham - rather we shall call it "kudhookalam"- Chaanse illa..
Getting reminded of these lines in the song "angel vandhaale" - " Neerukkul poothirundha poovonrai neendhi vandhu arindhaye.. nandri uyire"

Well, as per sendhil's wishes(see comment in the previous post), I have come back with lots of new experiences. The rusted 'moolai' was used after a long time. Once activated, now i feel like an over oiled instrument is on my head and infact, runs faster than ever. As a result, my analyses, thoughts, nakkal, nayyandi, logistics were/are in hyperactive state.
Oru example solren kelunga!!- Yesterday, I saw the name plate of a professor "Jerry Johnson".
Immediate thought after that was "will his brother be called as Tom Thomson" :)- Well, idhu maari innum ethanaiyo!! do's and dont's in current affiars, university governance, ISA governance, ideas for self-improvement.. etc. Such thoughts always flash only when you are trying to focus in studies.. Hmnn

Pranayama – When we hear this word, some of us tend to imagine that we walk over ocean, fly on air or attain great siddhis (powers). 'It's just not that'-aam!
What is Pranayama then?? When I googled, I find that Prana is a term employed in various forms of yoga. In Hindu yoga teachings, it signifies a subtle vitality contained in the air that is modified by the human body to govern its essential functions. The way by which we handle and control is called Prayanama.
Sriman sundaram describes prana as "Uyirnilai sakthi". "Prana" is omniscient and omnipresent. Prana causes the gases move around, stars shine, sun shines, moon give out its cool rays, yanthras work, thoughts and ideas come and disappear, mind works and rests. Prana walks over satva, raja and thamas gunas on us. Handling and controlling this prana is actually the pranayama.
Some people think that it’s just the art of breath control . In that case, snakes, and people who go to get beads (Muthu) out of ocean control breath and they should be great yogis and really healthy. Infact, such people who hold breath and go under ocean get a lot of diseases (yeh..dis-ease heehee if you don't follow, go to my previous post) related to sexual organs and are not explicitly/extraordinarily intelligent.
Okay..why then, pranayama is related to breath control? Having breath (swaasam) in a body is basically due to prana. This breath is an external action created by prana. Prana also has other internal functions or actions. Taking control of prana i.e pranayama directly is not possible and the easier way to handle prana is through breath and its control.
I am just translating this paragraph what I read. I am not very clear. “According to Vedas and shastras, there are many copies of 'brahmaandam' that exist in humans as fine sookshmaas. By controlling the prana in human body, we can control the entire universe and that’s how people get yogic power. Prana is brahmandam and vice-versa. Sriman sundaram compares prana to sun. Sun rays can be reflected on ocean and also on a small cup of water. So Prana is just one thing like that of sun.
Well, such sookshma pranayama has to be learned from a guru carefully and meticulously. But why then are we talking about such a tough and rare art??.
A step from normal living towards prayanama is breath control. Just learning this breath control art can alone fetch so many good things to have a healthy body and mind. It seems this body related art portion of pranayama can be learned w/o guru.
To be contd.

Tell me this.. In olden days, Brahmins were doing poojas and teachings, kings and ministers did take care of people and war, Black/ Gold smith did their job with metals, farmers did farming etc.. Their children also learned the same from them.
At a point of time in history after that, people started taking up multiple jobs say like, brahmins went to war and learned vedas, black and gold smith started selling other stuffs as well... etc.. Here, the children started learning multiple things from father and also other stuffs..
After this... what happened ???
And how did we reach to a state wherein we just know our caste and not learn anythng from our parents and grandparents??
Any guess why/ how / what made us as we are now??

Have you ever experienced a sort of fear given out by an intuitive feeling that, something shocking / some unexpected terrible result is going to happen- I wish to call this vayathula puliya karaikra (VPK) feeling as - ' ul bayam or than bayam'
Of all the bayams (adhaanga, 'fear'aame..edho solraanga) that I face such as thanni bayam/ height bayam / kovamaa kathinaa bayam, I get this 'VPK feeling ' (of / for / by me) quite often - during the most important time to the least . Even if I did things right or even when things around you go right, this " than bayam" will scratch me always. Infact one of my friends (namma 'zep' sir dhaan) called me "thenalini" - worstest la.. stilll...point valid...so accepted.
Okay .. matterukku varen.. If you still don't get what kind of feeling it is, here are some examples
Serious Timela : When I am performing an expt in lab and when my solution does not turn into the color that is expected, the ul bayam will tell me " priya, did u ever add the main reagent A. Though you had that reagent in hand, did you add it?.. though you tilted from your hand to 90'c, did it fall into the tube... though it fell in, did it stick to the walls of the tube or go straight "
Immediately or right after getting this thought
- Yeh that VPK feeling or ul bayam attacks the stomach and then the heart and finally the mind and you would feel that jerk!!
Jollyaana timela: When I was watching " Kaakha kaakha" for the first time, the song started like " she is a fantasy..shananana..she is a harmony.."
Right at that moment when I saw the school girls in skirt and blouse, I got this quick thought
" My God!! please don't introduce 'Jo' as a student and I can't withstand that.. please.. please"
followed by that exact VPK/ Ul bayam " Dumeeeeeeeeeel "feeling.
Then when I saw her as teacher in the next scene I got the relaxed ' appaadaa ' feeling.
Simple matterla: Today, I cut the pepperidge farm cookie cover with nails (nails only) , it got
torn unevenly here and there. I took the biscuits and then, I got this thought
" If dog bites this unopened cover, will it cut open better than me?" -My God.. the same old VPK feeling... " Dumeeel"
Then, I took scissors and cut it straight and I felt relieved only after that!!
Once, when my teacher blamed about my handwriting (actually mine is never bad.. believe me) , I used to literally think if kozhi knows to write tamil/english, will it scribble worser than me? etc..
Makkale, sirikaadheenga.. I know I have laughed at myself many a times..Seriousaa solren.. I always imagine stuff in total and feared about things..Adhanaaleye, "'Nadamaadum live entertainment" aa thiriyaren..
My friends around me say " You are always thinking.. Dont think too much" . So, ippo ellam..appopoo...koncham consciousaa yosikaren!!
Idhukku ellam naduvula, my mom/ grandmom would scold me even now for any act " Manasula "than" bayame illa.. Enna metthanam paaru..kannula thanni varudhaa paaru !!"
(manasukkula naan) " Amma.. idhukkum mela enaku "than bayama"...Idhellam too too much maa !!!"

On xx-xx-19xx, a pregnant lady was in a hospital for delivery. Her husband was tired of being in hospital for 2 days and lost patience. He was tensed but he could not see his wife not able to deliver. Doctors declared that its a complication and probably, we can wait for a day to see if the baby comes by itself - up side down. Yeh..the smart, beautiful, enhusisatic, intelligent baby (Ofcourse, its none other than me) was playing in the womb up-side down
My dad who was tensed, decided to go to a movie to relax (aatukaara alamelu- wherein "sri priya" was the herione) w/o telling others .. When he came back he found that cute baby was born. Appo..annikae... he decidedaam... this is a girl and so she should be named "priya" as she was born when i was watching "Sri priya"- I know.. the logic sounded "sakikala" to everybody including my mom..But as the name was good, they agreed upon it..
(atleast, its better than my friend sandy's case- she got her name because the nurse adviced to name so.. Parents during those day never had plans/ interests about their child's name .. chaa)
Appa always calls me 'Priya'. Chithis called 'Maayaa' (now priya) and ofcourse, paati's name "Shenbagalakshmi" is my official/religious name though nobody calls me so. Amma calls as 'veepee' (some times expands and teases me as ' Vevasthaketta priya'), Priya, Priyamvadha etc..whatever comes to her..
"sinna ponnu mava" - That's how the servant maid 'kamatchi' at my grandparents place (trichy) called me (Yeh, i was grown up till u.k.g at my grandparents' place)
"aei Piriiyaa" - That's how kamatchi, another servant maid in chennai, who took badhri and me on a bicycle to school, called me. And thats how "tamil miss and others" called me too.
"Preii..yaaaaa!!!" - My cousin badhri who lived at a home behind mine shouted to get my notes, watch tv at their home or exchange food between homes.
"freya" - guys in 5-6 standard tease me by calling so.
When somebody asks whats your name, I say "Priya"
or "Priya V" (during those days, the director priya v was not popular, so I was the only "Priya V" heehee)
or "V. Priya"
No problem.. Professors did not kill my name as like how they killed typical south indian names..bula-subraa-mann-yaan or so. ..I was lucky. But i was called differently among different groups..as 'kuttipriya' among batchmates and friends..as 'kupri' among girls in hostel and as 'cuppu' / 'cups' among close friends (cuppu / suppu..what crap..I hated this name but thats why they called me so) and as "pri" by my best friends in hostel.
Once, my best friend wanted to imitate my mom and wrote a letter with name Priyamvaadaa (adhu enna vijayavadaavaa??)..i was just laughing to myself.
I really liked the name 'kupri' and I feel so good and I get reminded of my hostel wingees. I sign off as 'Pri' in email when i really like the other person and/ when i am in a good mood as that was the name given by my best friends. Though I never thought to do intentionally so, I happen to discover that a few months ago.
This was the best period w.r.t the given names ever!!
Inga dhaan vevakaaram !!
Here in U.S I say " My name is Priya Venka ta krish nan" and let me spell it for you if needed.

My cousin Badhri has tagged me and as a result, I am answering here..
To me, this appears to be one of the toughest tags ever.. Who knows how people have perceived me !! Moreover, we meet people at different situations and they see you to be the personality that they observed during that time. Anyways..I will try my best to tell new things about me!!
1. During my college days, I considered that having crushes was an ill-feeling. Even when I just think somebody is handsome, I used to repent for it . And, I avoided speaking to guys...Ipoo yosicha, naanaaanu irukku... and its too silly...
2. I have sound sleep only when I am on a medication during illness. But everyday, I get a dream. Some are amazing but most of them are scary. Till date, I have no idea why is it so!!
3. I found that if somebody becomes my roommate, they either would fall in love or if already in love, all their problems would get resolved and get married.Ennala mathavangalukku kalyana rasi varum!! Till now ellarume!!
4. I dont have any specific favourite color till date.
5. I could never stay in an apartment for more than an year (at the max). Enaku moving rasi !!! Kaalula macham!!
6. I like solitude as much as how i like the crowd. In fact, I wish to really be with myself alone sometime every day and I dont think I would compromise that any time in my life.
7. I wish to own a cow and a calf someday and pet it.. get milk and bathe the cow and play with the kutti.
8. At my home, we should not say 'i dont like this vegetable, that fruit etc.' and we eat everything given. Otherwise, thitu udai dhaan!! Now, I boldly and happily declare "I am NOT fond of eating beetroot and cabbage ". Appaadaa!!
Okay over!! Now I tag
1. Arun (Let us see a post that should not talk anything about music)
2. Yaathirigan ( No travel talk)
3. Singamlae (No office/ s/w talk)
4. Prabukarthik (Neenga edhavenumnaalum sollunga!! )
This morning, I reached lab and opened my email box. I got an email from the president of Indian Students Association of El Paso.

This week I was thinking about this...
Have you observed those five star, kit kat like chocolates?? My question is this :
There are many layers of these chocolates. Crunchy/ soft chocolate, caramel (sweety chewy layer)and again a chocolate layer. How does these sandwich layer become solid seperately? May be at a particular temperature they are solidified. But even at hot places, the layers don't mix. Do you know how these layers are set technically? and how does the outer layer is made smooth (with what machine)??
Okay, here is the answer!!
How are chocolates made??
By Roasting Shelling Milling Conching and Tempering !!
Visit here http://www.wisegeek.com/how-is-chocolate-made.htm . This gives an elaborate explanation of chocolate making process. But its so good
Look at this for info about chocolates of many other countries
The melting and moulding process involves tempering machine

Tall people tend to get hunch back on their upper body. Also, we tend to get pain at upper back and shoulders due to sedentary work and posture. This is basically due to weak back muscles and posture. Bhujangasana is the best exercise to get rid of this problem. Bhujangasana- bhujanga- snake. People doing this can bend their body as flexibly as like a snake and also get gambeera look (bold attire)
Bhujangasana is an essential pose for developing the strength and flexibility of the entire back esp. the upper back, while toning the legs and buttocks, increasing circulation, and assisting in kidney function. Like many backbends, it is a "heart opener," subtly releasing held emotions within the rib cage to bring greater joy within the body. It is very easy to do especially if your back is not too stiff and rigid. Generally girls can do it much easily than guys.
How to do Bhujangasana
1. Turn over on the stomach and place the hands on both sides on the floor beside the chest muscles (pectoral muscles).
2. Press the palms down, adjacent to the shoulders (near under arms) on the floor. Inhaling, without lifting the navel from the floor, raise the head and neck and gradually bend the spine.
3. Stretching the body as much as possible.
4. Retain the breath, then exhale while slowly lowering to the floor. Rest, then repeat for 2 more times.
Time: Keep the pose for two seconds, gradually increasing to ten seconds. Do it from two to three times in the beginning and when the spine bends as like in the picture, you can do it up to 8 times.
2. Raise the head, neck and also shoulder bending the spine as shown in the figure. Lift up so that you can stretch the entire hand with just palms on the floor. Bend till you feel the stretch on the navel. This version can be practized along with the first version
As already mentioned, guys might find their body to be rigid in the beginning. When they try to lift their head and shoulders, they may lift right away from their thighs. So they may need to consciously hold their body on ground and gradually lifting the head, neck and shoulders. It may take some days to achieve perfectly. Depending on the age and strength of the body, it may take a while..But, trying this everyday would definitely make it possible. Some may face some pain for the first two days. But it will dissapear gradually.
Do it for 2 minutes everyday
The benefits will not come only after you achieve it perfectly. For every trial, this asana gives benefits based on body type. After you start seeing the benefits, if you stop doing them, the benefits will also not last long till life like pension.. It has to be done everyday to get long lasting benefits .
Our body has cells that are taking birth and death cycle. Many things are consumed and released. We eat everyday, use our senses exhaustively, use our brain thereby loosing lots of shakthi. In order to regain shakthi through sookshma indriya, in order to remove digestive waste completely, in order to compensate for all the non natural food we eat and non natural things we do, We need to do bhujangasana everyday!! This will take only 2 minutes. We don't ask " should we brush everyday??.. should we bathe everyday??" right!! Yeh incorporating this asana into our lives will fetch lot of goodness.
Excellent for slipped discs. It adjusts displacements in the spinal column and tones the sympathetic nerves.
Not recommended if you are suffering from peptic ulcer, hernia or hyperthyroid.
When bending the body backwards, be sure not to make any violent jerks, as this may injure rigid muscles.
To be continued..

Guys!! Before we exactly get on to each asana, let us discuss about the food habits that we need to cultivate to stay healthy and intelligent. The science concepts mentioned in this post are based on Sriman Sundaram’s physiology book !!
"I eat to live and not live to eat"- I have heard this from all around. Yeh It’s true to an extent. But when somebody shows importance to eat right thing at right time in a right way, many of us misunderstand and tease them. Infact, people tend to think that eating right means to count calories and/or eat food with calorie value on it. In modern science, though it’s believed to be true, there are controversial articles in the same field in this era!! A friend of mine (pb) told me about a research article that says "our body recognizes and digests the natural food much better than the artificially synthesized caloric and nutritious food. A natural food is a food only when that can be recognized as food by your grandparents (apple, grape, rice, bean). Rest of them do not add value to your health (energy drink etc.) "Surprising right!! Guess its better to eat apple , rice and bean rather than noodles, pasta and energy drinks!!
If I had not been in science or research, may be, I will not believe it to this extent. We discover, prepare and give medicines to alleviate the symptoms or at the max, identify the molecular changes during this illness. Most of our medicines (synthesized chemicals) act on those molecular changes occured and try to repair the state. But, Can you recollect the thirukural " Noy nadi noi mudhal naadi"- that’s what we need to do!! Now, I can see clearly that the modern treatment (therapy) does not target the cause of any illness!! In such case, as we are not doctors, is it not wise to eat properly and protect ourselves??
Okay, let's see the do's and don’ts about food.
We all know that we don’t get ill by sudden infection !! We are surrounded by toxic chemicals and microorganisms. We all have lots of toxic microorganisms living in our body even when healthy. During lack of proper food intake and worries, our immunity decreases, our body fights and finally, these microorganisms take us over and thereby make us ill. Yeh, the food makes the difference!! So, what shall we do to have proper food!!
Mix with saliva and eat slow: Many of us eat rice as main food which is rich in carbohydrate(70%).In order to have proper digestion, we need to mix the food with saliva, chew and eat slow. Why??? : Starch(in carbs) is processed basically through saliva. There has been expts. to test this. A starch containing liquid was held on mouth for a while and was tested to see if its chemical properties are modified. Yeh, it was.. When we eat food, it gets in with saliva. The gastric glands dont attack the food for 1/2 hr after intake. During this ½ hr, saliva processes the starch and makes it ready for gastric glands to act. When we don’t chew food or mixed with saliva properly, it gives stomach pain and affects the intestine as well. You would see people who eat 5 times a day - that too in fast pace may stay skinny with rib cage protruding out or with skin rashes and/or skin boils. It’s because of eating fast.
Do not swallow: People tend to swallow food while in a hurry. (My example.. Can you remember the time when you drink the last portion of rice with rasam/ rice with buttermilk) We tend to swallow... Please let our mouth grind!!! If we swallow, it’s like pressuring the stomach to take care of the food. Remember that the stomach that is supposed to work 100 yrs will work only for 20 yrs ..Gradually due to this pressure, symptoms like stomach pain, bad breathe from mouth, indigestion and loss of appetite becomes a part of us.
Using too much of seasoning ingredients while spluttering esp. mustard seeds and asafoetida is not good!
No Chillies(Red and Green): Sriman sundaram describes Chillies as ‘devil’. and it is the root cause of all stomach problem, piles, intestinal inflammation, indigestion, constipation and reduced blood content. If you google about the badness of chillies, you will hardly find anything. Puranic wisdom evinced by ancient medicine indicates that this is not a satvic thing. It engulfs RBCs from blood and converts it into water (I have not heard anything discovered so in modern science) It throbs the nerve endings and blunts them finally. It inflammates all the smooth muscles through which it goes. When we can feel the hotness of chily on hands (which has rough tissues) while grinding, imagine the state of soft smooth muscle lining and nerves internally!! You can argue that there are gastric glands!! But what about during the ½ hr time when the food just sits in the stomach!! Also, if they were totally taken care by gastric glands, why do we feel irritation the next day??
Sriman sundaram adds “There are people living in different countries without eating chillies at all. Since ages, chillies were never considered to be good. Even the traditional medicine practice warns the use of chillies indicating that it increases Kaama (lust), Krodha (anger),Lobha (greed) and mogham. Also, we don’t use chillies for death ceremonies that has been followed through ages. When you start with eating chilies, it comes out undigested the next day. But when you continue eating, its accepted by our body. Its all the need of our tongue/taste buds to achieve the taste."
Vitamin shakthi?? You can see all google sites showing chily has vitamin shakthi. But Sundaram mentions that it’s not wise to get vitamins from non- satvic food. If we need water, we don’t use sea water right!! The amount of harm it does overweighs the benefits. People eating chilies may not seem to have problem but the nerve shakthi that gives intelligence and intuitive intelligence (sookshma budhi) gets low. Please don’t wait for the modern science to rediscover this makkale !! Its wise to reduce its intake by now and if possible, abandon them. Even if we can’t do that, we should try not to habituate our children/ youngsters to eat hot food!! Pepper can be substituted to chillies though not to the same extent!!
Actually if you see, the real taste of food is in salt and not chillies. We cannot eat any hot stuff without salt.. But we don’t really notice that salt is hidden behind the taste!! Infact, after starting yoga asana practice, nerve strength and sudhi (cleansing) increases thus leading to hate chilies and other additive practices like coffee/ smoking/ drinking. Taking conscious steps to reduce will definitely help to get rid of such habits
Okay!! We shall get on to asanas next week!! Just be ready to spend 5 minutes a day from next week !!

Before we get on to "do's and dont's", I wish to tell you that I am reading a book on yoga practice (yogaabhyasam) written in 1938 by "Srimaan" Sundaram, a yoga therapist (yeh.. its my own translation..heehee..) cum doctor who had a yoga ashram even during pre-independence period. I am very much amazed at the knowledge and experience he had about the physiology of human beings and the possible diseases.
well...Lets continue with do's and don'ts.
Bath : Its okay to take bath before or after yoga practise. In cold countries, its okay to take bath in luke warm water and in countries like india, taking bath after yoga is better as stout and weak people tend to sweat after doing asanas.
Who shouldn't do yoga?? : People when suffering from fever, headache or any severe ailments, women during menstrual period are not supposed to practise yoga. People with weak heart and blood related problems have to consult a doctor before doing yoga to know which asanas can be allowed.
Prayer: Praying your favourite God before doing yoga is a good practice to focus your mind. Though asana practice ARE supposed to help us focus, trying voluntarily to focus our mind before yoga practice helps to maximum the benefits in a shorter span.
Food: Reducing the intake of chillies and tamarind gradually is important. Also, too much of seasoning, frying and heavy usage of asafoetida (perungaayam/ hing) should be avoided. We shall definitely discuss about food extensiviely in future.
Yoga and exercise - together ? : In general, people do exercises to get a toned muscular physique - broad chest and shoulders with 6 pac abs. etc. so that they can look and feel good. When such people get diseases, they can easily lose their physique that they gained out of exercise. It is necessary to have a strong, healthy foundation for internal body, organs and senses so that the muscles that are built through exercises over them can withstand even during times of illness. Basically, yoga practice increases the strength and activity of inner senses, inner organs, ductless glands and sexual organs, increases mental peace and longitivity of life.
So, people would want to do both exercise and yoga. People can do yoga in the morning and exercises during evening or vice-versa. Also, they can even do them on alternate days.
But, we should know that there should be a gap of atleast one hour between yoga and exercises/ atheletic workout. The reason is this: During or after yoga practice, blood sakthi is pulled to brain, organs and inner senses. When we do exercises related to external body, these worked-out inner organs/senses (by yoga) will not gain enough blood and lead to innumerable diseases.
Even the other way is bad. After running or weight training, doing yoga causes problems.
Story from yoga therapist Srimaan Sundaram:
A young man after his enthusiastic, athletic practice used to show off his ability, to stand up-side down with ease for 20 minutes, to his friends every now and then. Over a period, he developed some sort of nodule like thing on his head and that rolled down. Also, he developed tremors, headache etc and so, he was brought to yoga ashram to get treated. His activities were observed and he was warned to stop his athletic works and he was asked to do 'sarvangasanam alone' for a while and thereby he was cured.
When you think you can just do either one - yoga or exercise, its better to prefer yoga to exercise for the following reasons:
1. We dont need any special equipment to do yoga unlike exercises. ( Here in U.S, there is a fast pace-yoga practice which is yoga cum pilates. I dont mean that. I mean the relaxed asana practice)
2. We dont need to eat extremely nutritious food to practice yoga unlike exercises. ( Playing tennis, squash or doing weight training requires nutritious food). Even layman could afford it.
3. Yoga works on parasympathetic nervous system and exercise on sympathetic nervous system. Yoga acts directly on heart and lungs unlike exercises.
4. Yoga is energising and exercise is fatiguing.
5. The saints in india, who just lived by begging alms, stayed healthy just by doing yoga asanas.
Yeh, people with even parkinsons disease, diabetes and thyoid problems can gain their health and happiness back and rejoice ( I choose this word because I experience it) by yoga practice. Previously, people practice yoga as like pooja at home, later some did it as tradition or shastra and now its a profitable buisness abroad to give people a hope to decrease their ailment- My own experience !!
You might say me (like ace said)... Priya, there are very few yoga teachers now and is it not important to have a guru while doing yoga!! I had this question as well. Yeh!! even the great yoga therapist cum doctor Sriman sundaram had raised this issue in his book. Even during 1930's, it is common that when you raise the word " yoga", people say " Yoga has to be learnt only from a good guru.. otherwise dont even think about trying out". His answer is this " Though its true (that you need guru) to an extent, few lazy people take this as a strong objection and spoil others. Sukshma pranayama, some special kriyas and bandham need to be learned under guru. But, the basic asanas that regulate your breathing pattern can be practised by following a clearly written book (w/o guru). Its not wise to wait till you get a chance to find a yoga teacher and have a big tummy with inummerous diseases and above alll, the ignorance. If we use our brains and do sensible things, there shouldn't be any danger" .. Guys, I will assume that you are just following these posts and assure you that I will try to gather from different, authentic sources and give the best idea about each asana. Also , please share with me the ideas and knowledge that you have on these topics.

All we need to have are a ventilated place, an attitude to keep our body clean and an intention that " I will not abuse my body"
Okay, lets proceed to know about our body and learn yoga asanas to solve each problem. Before we exactly talk about each yogaasana, we shall know some basics to be followed to do yogaasanas. If you are a beginner and if you think its time to take care of your body, just follow along. I am a beginner too. Just 2 months ahead!! I will try to discuss about things that we might need to know in an order. Feel free to share your ideas, experience and knowledge !!
Morning or evening: Early in the morning, our body is stiff and people may find it tougher to do yoga when compared to evening. It is necessary to decide it is convenient to us. But we need to remember about food as well.
Before food : We need to do yogaasanas only before having food. If we know the reason behind this, we wont have problems in following this. When we eat, the food in the stomach is crunched forcefully by the muscles to digest. This process needs energy and blood circulation at the stomach and so, they are directed to the stomach. So, our brain and other parts are not so active during this time and thats why its better not to do any active work after eating. If such physical work is done, our food stays partly digested with poor blood and energy ciruculation like a mixture of "water and rice" in a gutter and such partly digested food is removed from body leading to many diseases. Also, practising yoga during such times will weaken muscles and cause to loose strength.
Right before an exam, we can see students eating heavy food and planning to burn midnight oil. Infact, he would have cups of tea and try to study. But Nidra devi will hug him and take him to sleep. Also, people who do exercises (non yoga) also eat something simultaneously to gain energy to lift weight and stuff... But its is wrong and its better not to eat anything during activity
We can do physical exercise (non yoga which works on superficial muscles ) 2 hrs after eating snacks and 4 hrs after heavy food. It is believed that it takes 5-6 hrs for the food to get absorbed from the intestine. By yoga practice, we crunch stomach, liver and intestine and this helps to remove the waste faster out from the intestine and the body as well. So its better that we eat 6hrs before performing yoga . Otherwise the partly digested food also will get along with waste out from the intestine. Then, there is no point in us eating nutritious food and we may have unnecessarily used our internal organs to work.
During evening time, there may be friends/ visitors or unexpected committments and we may tend to eat something as soon as we get home. Thus, it makes sense that we can do yoga in the morning easily with empty stomach. If you still want to do during evening, you can eat some fruits or veggies before 4 hrs. Its better to drink a glass of water right after brushing teeth. People who have higher bile levels (hyperbilirubinemia) can get fainted and they can drink a cup of milk and start yoga after 1/2 hr till they get to normalcy.
To loose stiffness: In the morning, we can get up and relax for 1/2 hr (say like read a book, do some work or cook or just walk for a while - something that works out well for us ) to reduce stiffness before doing yoga asanas.
To be continued....

Everybody wants some sort of happiness....Karmayogis who work for the welfare of others without expecting anything in return wants some sort of happiness that is permanent or stable.. any common man who still has cunningness, revengeful attitude etc. looks for something that gives temporary happiness (after any act )..Every man tries something out and sees if it gives happiness and satisfaction or not and kindaa selects things that give happiness..Any achievement that we make using our body always had been linked to the pathway (by our ancestors) that leads to understanding our soul and self.
We all would have heard from great sages that our happiness is within us. If we stop thinking about our external problems/passions, we can hear the inner self. I have never understood it till date though I remember what I heard.May be thats because we all have thought that "I am not born to become spiritual" or "I dont think I can do it". Okay !! please dont think that I am talking too much philosophical.. I am tellling all this to reemphasize the fact that our ancestors had kept their body in good shape not because they wanted to show that they can have a roadroller roll on them but to get into the spiritual path. Even people who did not want to get too much spiritual, need body strength to achieve their goals through strong determination (mind).
Right from childhood, we always study, get a degree and a job. I have heard stories from one of my friends, vino, who has a big agricultural land about how his father would take him, make him work in fields.what all he would do whenever he gets bored with studying (though they are THE landlords of that area). Do you think WE will have the strength to do such work when by chance we are out of our studies / job. Many of us have loose flabby fatty muscles, weak bones, poor ball and socket joints. Some of us even have problems such as wheezing, dust allergy, sinus. What does all this crap mean?? I hardly ever heard these problems from my parents generation ..How come we all got so sick?? Our parents/ grandparents who struggled hard economically have made us focus to study and thereby did they spoil our health by not making us do much physical activity. No... we cannot just blame them.. its also the techie advancements that made us sedentary.
Apart from that, are most people who always worked physically, free of health problems? True to an extent but not always true. Whatever it is, the thing that I see in our generation and a generation before is this. We spend so much time and energy to make money, gain knowledge, wisdom and give happiness to our people around. Do we ever bother about our body and our constantly thinking mind!! They are supposed to work for us always like our eyes. Only a blind man will know how much an eye is of use!!
People realize it only when they get to a stage with disease(s) and/or ailment(s) and they become incapable of eating the food that they bought with the hard earned money. I too realized it only after suffering. I had developed some sort of back pain since last few months. In the beginning, I stayed quiet and later went to a doctor..When the doctors here and in India felt that everything is normal with my spine bones and body except that they is a muscle pull and told me to observe my body and change my lifestyle, thats when I thought about my body and mind. Till date I have not clearly understood the nature of our body and its functions and I am working on such a seemingly subtle but undiscovered problem with body.
During this time, I have gained many things out of which the foremost thing is I have attempted to understand our physiology and gained little success with exercise and yoga. The next is I have understood much of the flaws that I have in me and the third is I have understood the importance of yoga asanas and how it works.
Yeh, you might also say that the physiology is still so fascinating and much is not discovered.. Its a puzzle and so its normal to not understand. But tell me this.. what is the knowledge that a common man has about physiology. We try to know how our cell phone works, how the share market inflation changes etc. etc.. But do we ever bother to know where is our liver in body? what function it does? How can we avoid diseases? Because it seems complicated.. It is not!!!
Even if we try, we get to know info in bits and pieces..We all think its the doctor's job to repair our body and we cannot avoid/are not responsible for any problems that happen within our body..
Above all, the thing that I really hate is " we believe too much of modern science and get into deeper picture instead of understanding a broader picture of physiology". There were saints and body built people from india who attainned great heights just by controlling their senses and passion. One who can control his own senses and passion( they are called jithendrian) can really achieve anything impossible... People who just try to go in that path will atleast stay free of illness. Those people knew never knew molecular biology techniques, gene function etc. but they knew the basic body physiology and biochemistry just like our grandparents know. So, staying healthy and having a calm mind do NOT need specialisation in biology. But we dont know even that physiology.
So, what do you say Priya??..Okay..
My motto of this post and the forthcoming posts are to help us understand the importance of knowing our body. I wish to share the little knowledge that I gained in physiology w.r.t physiological problems..Stay tuned.. Please feel free to share your ideas as always.. I hope you gain something out of these science posts as like sindhai sidharal previously!

Sivaji, Kamal, Vikram, Vishal.. Appappo overaction pannuvaana. Have you ever observed your mind doing something like that? I mean overacting brain..something like overthinking..over(re)acting..overresponding..
Its very amazing to see how our brain remembers the acquired knowledge and applies it methodically while performing a new action. Most of the times, such application works positive and fetches us a name " Very sytematic..Creative.. applying "..But, sometimes it sodhappifies..
"Ippo ennan ra??" - I guess this is your reaction. Okay... you will understand from the way how my brain sodhappifies at times like these :
1. In one of the types of experiments that I do, I always have 2 sets of samples..after I get the samples processed, I wear gloves (a pair) and start the next step. Recently, I had to use 3 sets of samples.. After I got the samples processed, automatically I took 3 gloves and I realized it only after wearing the pair (and looked for another hand) heehee..
2. While reading about pradosham for aanmeegham blog, I read somewhere that the duration for pradosham was 2.5 hrs. But I was kindaa sure that it's 1.5 hrs..Immediately my mind, at a glance, reasoned out for the loss of one hour " Is this because of the day light savings..Did people calculate Lord Shiva's dance between nandhis horns (pradosham time) during day light saving hours??". Then, I realized how my mind overacted..
3. When I go to the dark room to develop a film for the experiment, automatically I switch off the light and used to stay silent (stop humming) and switch off the ipod even... My mind had extrapolated that both sound and light should not get there instead of just switching off light..
Okay okay.. instead of thinking and laughing at me, think about how generally our brains overact:)- and makkale..you see..I could list only the sodhappals and it is practically not possible to list all my creative..applying..all positive actions of my brain..you see:)-
Okay, share YOUR overactions and overthinkings here ! Lets have fun!

In continuation with such Govinda Govindaa analysis, I really wanted to know and talk about why we say 'enakku kaadhu kuthaadha!!'
This could be a possible explanation for kaadhu kuthal. The hearing hole in the ear (natural) is supposed to hear all good stuff (nalladhe kael). Things like rumour, lie and anything irrelevant(not good), when heard, are supposed to go close to the ear but they have to be ignored. So, they are thought to go through only the hole made on the ear lobe (man made hole) and not the hearing hole.
So, when somebody lies, we say ' enakku kadhu kuthiyaachu' to mean that I have my ear already pricked to let off the things like what you say. You don't have to lie and that will only go through my earpricked hole.
This may / may not be right. But this is what I heard. Okay..okay.. I will stop with this.. no such analysis hereafter :)-

ஆன்மீகத்தில் - விசேஷமான நாள்
Wondering what is lost? Yeh!! That’s what I would think first when I see this title till last few months!! Yeh, most of you would tend to think so.
Have you ever thought why do we relate the name govinda to losing and not getting back??
Well, ‘Go’ - cow / land or one’s senses , ‘Vinda’ - protector. Lord Krishna lifted Goverdhanagiri to protect the cows and villagers and Indra awarded this title “Govinda”. You must be saying like arivaali Muthulakshmi - adhaan enaku theriyungale. Read ahead!!
Later in 8th century, adishankarar wrote the very famous Bhaja Govindam. In that he said " If we just worships Govinda, we can easily get out of this great ocean of birth and death and go to the eternal blissful Vaikundham and not get back to earth". This should have been inculculated in everybody’s mind and passed through generations. In the later days, the name Govinda should have been used to denote ‘not get back ’. Over the period ‘Govinda gooovindaa’ should have been used to denote anything to ‘not get back and totally get lost-poyee pochu’.
Idhu theriyaama ivlo naal irundhen.. Just thought I will share this with you all. It has been long time that I blogged.
Well, do you guys know why we say that ‘kaadhu kuthaadha’ when somebody lies ? Therinja sollunga :)-

Here I am with the next stanza of "Kaadalikkum aasai" song from "Chellame".
3rd Stanza..
Starbucks Coffeeyo!! - அதன்மேல்
உள்ள Whipped creamo !!!
ஊ.. ஒ..ஹு... காதலிக்கும் ஆசை...
When I read it now, I felt that it to be too silly as I had incorporated all things that I saw in the airport that day !! Anyways..
Where is 'mettu' for this 'paatu'?
I came up with the following duet-lyrics with no tune on mind in specific.. it will be great if somebody can correlate a tune for this.
To me it appeared its a masala- tune lyrics of "Un paarvaiyil oor aayiram"+ "Kanaa kandenadi"
+..some other songs that i heard which is not in my mind now.. Paatu - sutha saivam.. Tell me what tune do you think will fit this???
Of late, I was amused at the lyrics of "Chithiraiyil ennavarum" and "Mobilea.." from the songs that I randomly listened to.. Let me know the ones that you liked!!
