Pranayama-1

Most of the following contents is just the transliteration of the book written on yoga by yoga therapist 'Sriman sundaram'. I already talked about this 1930-book in my previous yoga post. I think its really useful to all of us even now.

Pranayama – When we hear this word, some of us tend to imagine that we walk over ocean, fly on air or attain great siddhis (powers). 'It's just not that'-aam!

What is Pranayama then?? When I googled, I find that Prana is a term employed in various forms of yoga. In Hindu yoga teachings, it signifies a subtle vitality contained in the air that is modified by the human body to govern its essential functions. The way by which we handle and control is called Prayanama.

Sriman sundaram describes prana as "Uyirnilai sakthi". "Prana" is omniscient and omnipresent. Prana causes the gases move around, stars shine, sun shines, moon give out its cool rays, yanthras work, thoughts and ideas come and disappear, mind works and rests. Prana walks over satva, raja and thamas gunas on us. Handling and controlling this prana is actually the pranayama.

Some people think that it’s just the art of breath control . In that case, snakes, and people who go to get beads (Muthu) out of ocean control breath and they should be great yogis and really healthy. Infact, such people who hold breath and go under ocean get a lot of diseases (yeh..dis-ease heehee if you don't follow, go to my previous post) related to sexual organs and are not explicitly/extraordinarily intelligent.

Okay..why then, pranayama is related to breath control? Having breath (swaasam) in a body is basically due to prana. This breath is an external action created by prana. Prana also has other internal functions or actions. Taking control of prana i.e pranayama directly is not possible and the easier way to handle prana is through breath and its control.

I am just translating this paragraph what I read. I am not very clear. “According to Vedas and shastras, there are many copies of 'brahmaandam' that exist in humans as fine sookshmaas. By controlling the prana in human body, we can control the entire universe and that’s how people get yogic power. Prana is brahmandam and vice-versa. Sriman sundaram compares prana to sun. Sun rays can be reflected on ocean and also on a small cup of water. So Prana is just one thing like that of sun.

Well, such sookshma pranayama has to be learned from a guru carefully and meticulously. But why then are we talking about such a tough and rare art??.

A step from normal living towards prayanama is breath control. Just learning this breath control art can alone fetch so many good things to have a healthy body and mind. It seems this body related art portion of pranayama can be learned w/o guru.

To be contd.

who told u ordinary people get lot of dieases..not b true.
Even yogis like BVKS Iyengar,Ramana maharishi,Ramakrishna suffered of cancer.
That's not all relevant to context.

Yogi is one who pure in mind & thought didn't harm other people & feeling.
(any other statement is welcome)

""By controlling the prana in human body, we can control the entire universe and that’s how people get yogic power. """

Frm rajayoga(vivekanda),Manavalar kalai books this might be true.
By breath u can feel prana flowing inside
thro each and every cells r rejuevenated with o2.Once ur master in communicating
with ur cells with prana,u can control/impact on other people cells.(i.e healing, mesmerising). This can be extended to universe as all r came frm same molecule, core etc.
(not sure :-) )

""It seems this body related art portion of pranayama can be learned w/o guru""

As much inhaling & exhaling in empty stomach is ok.Not retention.may result in adverse effects.

Hai visayan,
Thanks for sharing your ideas.

as I already said, I am just translating Sriman sundaram's words.
And here, he DID NOT say ordinary people get diseases.. the words "Such People get lot of disease " refer to people who go under sea to get muthu tend to get problems/ diseases related to sexual organs though they can control their breath. Basically he tries to say that pranayama is not just breathcontrol. I request you to read things along with the context and then comment and if its not this clear, I will reword it again.

And the "disease hee hee" part can be understood if you have just read my previous post.. And, i know that everybody gets disease and I am a common man.

Well, thanks for the comments about the other section and I will translate what he says about the rest wherein he says retention can also be done for short time (i guess 10-15 "om" repeating time.. i will make sure before I commit)

let's just say. "prana" is the life energy. "Yama" literally means to control. The pranic energy in the human body according to Patanjali munivar's yoga Shastra flows through the body through "nadis". these nadis are unlike the ones in "nadi josiyam" just channels of prana. There are around 80 lakh nadis in the human body

To rejuvenate these and channelize the prana effectively, we stimulate the nadis through pranayama. The 80 lakh nadis are majorly subdivided into many categories.

But there are three main nadi branches known as "Chandra Nadi"- the cooling branch. The "Surya Nadi"- the heating nadis. The "sushumna nadi" popularly dubbed as the kundalini energy, situated at the base of the spinal cord.

The first two branches are actiavted by the Pranayama.

Long lecture. Interesting and very very effective. Retention of breath is okay but it is mostly through deep inhalation and slow exhalation

:) take a deep breath.

for me, it is a simple, systematic concentration exercise to be performed thrice a day[during two sandhyavandanam and madhyanyakam], to charge the batteries.

Hi Priya,
Sorry for an irrelevant comment. But I wanted to contact you somehow. I saw your comment on muthukumar's blog "people I know". You have mentioned that the song "Vellathaal Azhiyadhu, venthanalaal vegadhu" is a song by avvaiyaar. Could you let me know in which book it appeared? This would be helpful because I want to type that song in my thesis. Muthukumar's blog was the only place where I found the song, when I searched for the source of the song! You may just drop a coment at my blog or e-mail me at lavanya.kannan@gmail.com
